FRIDA AMANI: People don’t know that I am not as gangster as I look.
This interview was held in 2020, while some statements will still be relevant other parts of the conversations have been modified to the current state. We talked to the hip-hop queen from Tanzania on her music journey.
"Music was something that I really wanted to do & I went for it
Tanzanian rapper, Frida Amani started music at a very young age, raised by her grand parents & who also shared the love for music. That made it rather easy for her to learn about music especially reggae. Through her grandparents, Frida got to experience amazing artists like Bob Marley & Lauryn Hill.
“You know one day, I’m gonna be like her”
The first time I heard Lauryn Hill, something inside of me said,
Besides Music what else do you do?
Besides music I work as a presenter in one of the biggest radio stations in Tanzania, East Africa radio. Now a presenter at Clouds Media
Do you consider Mi na We a track that introduced you at a wider range, East Africa to be specific? What was the inspiration behind it?
Not so sure about that, I feel like ‘pull up’ did the job but I love ‘Mi na We’ (her hit single).
‘Mi na We is one of my favorite songs, it’s one of those songs you do that you are not so serious about, then it just vibes, then you decide to let it out & people love it too.’
“The Inspiration came from a true story”
What has been your most profound project so far? Why?
My most profound project I would say ‘Jibebe’, it was the first song that I ever released, am glad I did it, that was the first song I released officially & I’m glad I made that decision.
“at the time I was going through a lot, I just didn’t know what to do, then made a significant decision, I said to myself, you know what, let it out”
I did it & my fans were there to work with me & I’m so glad that I did it. I still love Jibebe, I still feel the same way about it like the first time I decided to release it. I still feel the same way about every song that I release, so I am glad I made that decision.
In a scope of 5 years, where do you see yourself as an artist?
Where do I see myself in 5 years, I don’t know if I like to say where I see myself in 5 years but what I can tell you is where do I see myself now.
“I see myself as one of those artists who is real, authentic & the talent is there, I work hard, so I think am going to be one of the greats to ever happen in East Africa, in Africa to be honest, that’s where I see myself.”
In 5 years I will be so far, I feel like my art will be so big cause you know I keep on growing everyday, I promise my fans that in 5 years I will be one of the artists that delivers.
Can I just say what a comfort to find somebody who really knows what theyre talking about on the web. You definitely understand how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people have to read this and understand this side of your story. I was surprised that you arent more popular because you surely possess the gift.
